Sree Poornathrayesa temple is situated in Tripunithura, Kochi, the capital of the former Kingdom of Cochin. The temple is very famous in our kerala and also india. The temple is considered among the greatest temples in Kerala. The temple is famous for its yearly Utsavams or festivals. The main one being the Vrishchikoltsawam which is conducted every year in the month of Vrishchikam (Nov-Dec) whic his the 'Ulsava' Season in Kerala.
The deity in this temple is Lord Vishnu who is in the form of Santhanagopala Murthy. It is well believed that childless couples will be blessed with children on praying Poornathrayesan.The Lord is the family deity of the erstwhile Kochi dynasty.
Lord Vishnu, here, is worshipped as Poornathrayeesa “thra" means three; 'poorna' means complete and 'isa' means Iswara which means the Lord of Knowledge, or the Lord of the Three Vedas – Rik, Yajus and Sama. It also means the Lord who manifests himself as the essence of the Vedas, who can be attained through inner saadhana.
Vishnu, here, is worshipped as 'Santanagopala Moorthy', or the protector of kids. The temple is believed to have come into existence in 'Dwapara Yuga', about 5000 years ago.Unlike other Vishnu temples, where the Lord is seen as reclining on Anantha, here, the Lord is seen in a unique pose. He is sitting on Anantha, who spreads his majestic hood over the Lord. It is said that, when Krishna and Arjuna reached Vaikuntam, the Lord got up from his serpent bed to receive them.
Offerings
There is a Keda Vilakku which is said to be the first lamp lit by Arjuna during the original consecration of the idol. Arjuna collected some gingely seeds and made oil out of the seeds to light the lamp. “Olpenna” (offering of gingely oil) is offered to the lord in memory of this event. So this is considered to be the most important Vazhipadu in this temple.
